Super Mario – The Many Worlds Interpretation

Thank you to Robin who emailed me a link to this clip which I have converted to video for placing on the blog.

(just click on the play button and adjust the volume to your requirements)

It is a fabulous explanation of Hugh Everett’s Many World Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics using the popular Nintendo computer game character Super Mario.

As mentioned in the clip, whilst Everett’s interpretation was dismissed at the time of publication, it is now one, if not THE, leading interpretations of Quantum Mechanics amongst leading Quantum Physicists.

In a September 2007 conference David Wallace reported on a proof by David Deutsch and himself of the Born Rule, starting from Everettian assumptions and this has been reported in many areas since as support for parallel universes and also the Many Minds Interpretation of H.Dieter Zeh, David Albert and B.Loewer, which all leads us to Tony’s CTF theory and my own CtCw theory of consciousness.

I hope you enjoy it.

Brings a whole new meaning to "GAME OVER" doesn't it?

This is really, REALLY interesting!!! And I am an unlikely but HUGE fan of Mario.. and have played many of the games...
Before Itlad, I used to think that there were many analogies between these games and *real life* i.e. as follows;
You collect lives on the way according to your abilities.
If you avoid obstacles, or enemies, it only becomes worse for you, so you must defeat each one as it appears or deftly outrun them.
You can sometimes choose a partner/friend to help you along your way.
You can have some fun along the way!!
You can store your achievements and then *tune in* to them, on your next time around.
You can go along for years(it happened in my games!!) and then discover an AHA!! moment... a secret that stayed hidden until you stumbled upon it. It seems there are indeed, many parallels between these games and the Itladian theory.. just as da Vinci foresaw many future creations, we are evolving into technology more but it is tying into our minds as well.
Happy Playing everyone!!

Jesamyn: What a fabulous comment.

I'd never have had you down as a gamer Jesamyn, and a Mario fan to boot!!!

I like your gaming analogy, it reminded me of another recent post:

The Bohmian IMAX as a Computer Game
[by Woodsprite]

(and the links to others within the comments)

Thanks for your interpretation Jesamyn.

Yes, that was an interesting little clip. Glad you put it there, thank you. I saw immediately the link to Woodsprite's post. Jesamyn, your remarks are quite interesting to me. I remember reading David Deutsch before I had ever heard of Tony, and thinking he was compelling, but odd. I grasp all of this far better now.

Thank you Karl! Restrictions on the computers at work kept me from uploading the video last night. I was hoping you'd do something with it. And your commentary gives Mario the buoyancy he needs to float in our little brain-pool.

I can almost make out a cloud of particle waves collapsing as each little Mario appears! *wink*

Susan Marie: Thank you, I'm glad it helped.

David Deutsch wrote a fantastic book called "The Fabric of Reality" in which he applies Everett's MWI to suggest the existence of such Sci-Fi classics as Quantum Computers, the Turing thesis, Time Dilations and Time Travel.

Would this be what you remember reading of his?

Robin: My pleasure Robin!

Thank you for sending it to me. I know I've mentioned this clip somewhere before on here a while ago but it would have been in a comment somewhere and I couldn't quite remember which one so I spent some time converting it to video for everyone as you were so right in what you emailed me about.

Where would we be without buoyancy?

And oooooh, do I see a CtCw analogy there?
*collapses*

Excellent analogy. Thanks Karl and Robin!

I do apologise, especially to you, Woodsprite. I honestly had not seen your previous post!!!(re Life being Bohmian Imax).. anyway I still prefer Mario and his rotor-blade-legged sibling Luigi to any Grand Theft Auto, Shoot Down An Enemy Plane, or Box Your Opponent til he Collapses type games!!!

This was the last thing i watched before going to bed last night, there isn't the time or the blog space required to tell you of the weirdness!

p.p.s

I lost my job yesterday, anyone have employment for a cheeky young man with a heart of gold?!?!

SM Kovalinsky said...

KLLM: I read a series of articles by Deutsch; cannot quite remember what they were. Think it was on his website.

Fear not, Hurly; I shall employ you, or try, in any case. Send that dissertation!

Hurlyburly said...

Erm, are you sure, not going to lie Susan, i'm kind of lazy....

SM Kovalinsky said...

Well, yes, Martin; I know you have a lazy streak, but far be it from me to hold that against you. Now how did you manage to lose your job? I am sure that everything will work toward the good. Now have you sent me off that dissertation, or were you lazy in that regard as well? And are we not inspired by Mario and the MWI here, HB???

Anthony Peake said...

The Fabric of Reality is a really excellent primer with regard to the MWI. His website is also very worth taking a look at.

Unfortunately I have not played computer games for years. I recall really enjoying "Myst" and "Riven" but other than that I have not really involved myself.

However with the advent of Second Life and such-like the whole VR thing seems to be very itladian in its implications.

SM Kovalinsky said...

Yes, very ITLADian in the implications. What impressed me chiefly when I found you was merging of Nietzsche's eternal recurrence - which he had tried in vain to find true 19th century scientific support of - with 21st century technology. To me, it was as though you were reaching back to him to help, and he was stretching his hand out to you. The same with PK Dick's Anarch Peake: you reached back to his idea, as if to say, "will my name help here at all?". I believe Dick never knew that the man would arise who would rhyme esoterically with that codename. But when he did , it change things retrospectively. Thus also with Nietzsche; also with Shakespeare's Hamlet, as I wrote you in my essay. They had their ideas and died with them; you arose and resonated back to them. Such profound philosophy to be applied to MWI, as it takes on such personal aristocratic meaning. To a philosopher, beautiful; far exceeding simply theory of MWI. You are a reverser of time, a changer of things in retrospect. That is your strength, and the power of Cheat the Ferryman. I should stop here and I will.

Thanks for the video, Karl and to Robin for sending it to you.

I'll be showing this to every child I know (quite a few) and start sowing some early seeds. They will really relate to this, it's excellent.

I can't quite get my head round how this and Karl's Probability Density Function sit together but will ponder further and await the AHA moment!

Martin, sorry about the job, maybe Daemonic guidance will lead you to the right one! Good Luck.

Karl le Marcs,
I have to go to work but thankyou for directing me to this. I like it and I know MWI of Hughs Everett. I know Deutsch also and I know you have many interesting variations on this theme in your quantum writings. And I read of this of cours in ITLAD. This is a good encapsulation here,Ak

Such fun. Thank you Robin.

Jesamyn: Great comments thank you.

Thanks too Karl for the book suggestion.

Karl Le Marcs said...

Hurlyburly: Sorry to hear about your job mate, but you were always better than that place so I hope you find something more like what you want to do soon.

Karl Le Marcs said...

Susan Marie: Yes, Deutsch is a prolific article writer but I would seriously recommend "The Fabric of Reality" if ITLAD has given you any interest in Quantum Mechanics and especially the MWI.

Karl Le Marcs said...

Tony: I believe other things took your attention during your youth other than games my friend.

*smile*

Karl Le Marcs said...

Johar: You're welcome, I'm glad you liked it, and I'm all for eductating the young folk as early as possible so I'm sure the children will have some interesting questions after watching this, so please share some of them if you would be so kind.

You say "I can't quite get my head round how this and Karl's Probability Density Function sit together but will ponder further and await the AHA moment!"

This confuses me, as ALL the possible positions for Super Mario IS the Probability Density Function (and the PDF is in no way my theory, I just incorporate it into CtCw)

Hope this helps you reach the A-Ha moment.

Andrew: Thank You.

Ra from Ca: Thank you, Ruth.

And I'm glad you are interested in following my book suggestion.

It's nice to hear from you, I keep hoping you will join in with our Sunday ITLADic Science Service also.

Thanks for the explanation, Karl, fitting the pieces together in my usual manner, that is, very slowly.

Karl Le Marcs said...

Johar: Your welcome.

Put that mallet down.

I've ceremoniously burned it! *grin*

There's a patient version of me out there somewhere!

Jo, we are so alike! Patiently waiting for it to absorb. And it is. Fun stuff here!

Tony & Karl, I can see you patting us on the heads and mumbling something about beginners.

All... Remember when 'Pong' was introduced? We thought we were riding high on the wave of technology then!

Karl Le Marcs said...

Robin: *pats head*

Hey! You are far from a beginner Robin; you have a very deep fundamental grasp of the concepts.

Imagine a Many Worlds 'PONG' game, with trillions of paddles, ha!!

Human 'PONG'

Anthony Peake said...

KARL: Thanks for placing this on here. We again have the MWI cropping up in the most unlikely places.

It is interesting that thw Champion Wrestler Alex Shane, when he met Richard and I a few months back, suggested a very strong argument that the life we perceive is a super game programme where every possible outcome of every act has already been programmed into the game. Time is an illusion because all these possible futures co-exist in an eternal present.

Karl Le Marcs said...

Tony: You're very welcome mate.

I'm sure you see the similarities between your comment above and what we chatted about in the comfy chairs on Friday regarding my ideas to explain the "Bohmian Mutations" when we add "Collapsing the Consciousness wave (CtCw)" to ITLAD/CTF.

Chris said...

This is such a good way of explaining it to people who may have difficulty understanding the concepts in real time terms.

Thanks for the post, I'll be linking friends to this!

Karl Le Marcs said...

Chris: Thank You, I'm delighted that it has helped you and I hope your friends enjoy it also.
