HB,
I thought Flash Gordon was master of the universe?
Thanks for the heads-up. Be interesting as to what he may have to say about MWI and Dark Matter.
Flash Gordon?
Speaking of Life flashing before your eyes refferences.
Actually, Flash is the Savior of the Universe; he'll save every one of us.
He-Man is one of the Masters of the Universe.
Duh,
Clearly out of my depth when it comes these super hero types.
Never really liked Queen anyway.
Ended up missing the programme by the way. Was it good?
I do believe it's a 2-parter. Caught 20 minutes of it this morning but had to dash to work. They were just getting into black holes when i left (not literally)
Part One was a kind of gentle introduction to Hawkian physics which ended around the time of "Brief History" in 1988 so I guess Part Two next week will delve somewhat deeper. I did, however, find myself howling at the TV in disagreement with Hawking (as I often do at this particular point) regarding the split of positive and negative mass particles around the black hole (where the positive mass particles escape but the negative mass particles are sucked out (oooer, obviously), er, ).
Surely (!) If even photons (or light particles) cannot escape the gravitational (even this I have issues with) pull of the black hole then how can mere positive mass particles travelling at (at best) half the speed of light possible have enough energy.
*Deep breath and swig of coffee*
I did however win my bet with a friend of mine who I challenged to have a drink of wine every time the words "Black Hole" or "Penrose" were mentioned. She lasted about 15 minutes !!!
*Hee Hee*
I believe this is the initiation process they have in prison nowdays.
ps, check out Discovery channels "Universe" series, if you can, it's quite good.
And "Horizon" on BBC 2 tonight on "Are we alone in the universe".
Martin:
"I believe this is the initiation process they have in prison nowdays."
HUH !!
*scratches head*
Refering to:

I WAS CALLING YOU A BIG GEEK SIR!!
Take a straw and suck more of the humour out, there wasn't much there to begin with!!!!
Geek ! How VERY dare you !
I demand satisfaction !
(erm, ahem!)
Nerd (ish) I'll give you !
She chose the phrases "Singularity" and "Dark Matter" which I readily accepted as my Geek/Nerd ishness told m that Dark Matter wouldn't even be considered until Part Two.
*Devilish laughter*
Evenings are seldom dull in my company!!!!!
*raises eyebrow*
In light of interesting comments by "Ken" on here and Hawking's own comments re the search for the meaning of "Quantum Gravity" in the atomic world, I would like to draw attention to my previous post here: http://cheatingtheferryman.blogspot.com/2008/02/quantum-gravity.html
It's all getting rather interesting !!!
