Response to posting "Slow Death Experience"

Thanks RAC for a very interesting posting with regard to what is experienced by the conscious mind in the last few seconds of life. In response to this I would like to post an unpublished section of the original version of ITLAD when it was still plain old Cheating The Ferryman. In this I wrote the following:

'Bhagawhandi was dying. That was obvious to all who knew her. The doctors had diagnosed a malignant brain tumour, an astrocytoma, which was impossible to remove. She was only nineteen years old. What surprised everybody was how remarkably cheerful she was, accepting totally that she had but a short time to live. The tumour was growing larger day by day and was inching forward towards her temporal lobe. Up until this stage she had suffered the occasional seizures but nothing particularly debilitating. However as soon as pressure was placed upon her temporal lobe her seizures became more frequent – and stranger.

In the early stages of her illness the seizures had been grand mal convulsions but her new ones were altogether of a different nature. She would not lose consciousness, but would drift into an epileptic – like dream-state, similar to that described by Hughlings Jackson. She began to experience the classic ‘reminiscence’ as described in chapter 4.

However this dream-state soon developed into something far stronger. Bhagawhandi began to have very realistic hallucinations about being back in India, and not just India but the India of her childhood. In these semi-waking states she actually found herself back on the dusty streets of her old village, interacting with people and circumstances long disappeared in the mists of time. She would find herself listening to a speech being made in the village square. On one occasion she was in a church, in another in a graveyard. She claimed that she was actually re-living these memories as actual events.

As Bhagawhandi’s present life began to ebb away she began to live more and more in her new world created from her own past. The visions ceased being occasional and began to take up most of her waking hours. She lay, her young face rapt in attention to a world inside her own mind, with a faint, mysterious smile on her face. What was happening had a profound effect upon the nursing staff around her. All accepted that something very strange, but very wonderful was taking place. Nobody disturbed her allowing her her dreams.

The psychiatrist responsible for her was also fascinated. He felt awkward but was keen to know exactly what was taking place. He asked her quietly “Bhagawhandi, what is happening?”

“I am dying”, she answered, “I am going home. I am going back where I came from-you might call it my return.”

During the next week she disappeared totally into the world of her memories. She ceased responding to all external stimuli but lay with the same faint smile on her face. Three days later she quietly slipped away, returning permanently to her own past. And in this way she died, as the psychiatrist poetically described it “or should we say, arrived, having completed her passage to India”.

At first sight this case, so described in Oliver Sacks’ wonderful book The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat, seems to have many similarities with the discoveries of Wilder Penfield described in an earlier chapter. Indeed Sacks and his associates came to the same initial conclusion. However on reflection this was seen as a far more complex phenomenon. The Penfield memories were very similar to tape recordings in that if interrupted they would, if started again, go through the memorised event again. For Bhagawhandi the hallucinations were much wider in terms of their structure. To extend the analogy of videotape it seems that Penfield’s patients accessed their memories via a videocassette recording. The recall was presented in a rigidly linear format with no options on random access. Bhagawhandi’s memories on the other hand seemed to be recorded upon a format such as a DVD. Not only was random access available but also differing viewpoints and sound effects could be selected. This three-dimensional memory recall is exactly how Karl Pribram believes memory, and perception to work. Sacks’ tragic young patient was re-accessing her memories as recorded in the holographic-like processes suggested by Pribram and Bohm.

Could it be that what was taking place in the mind of the young Indian girl is an actual normal part of the death process? Could this be the explanation why the brain seems to record every event of a person’s life…to begin a ‘sensearound’ re-run of the whole show as we approach the final curtain?'

Is it possible that this, together with the sensing of the presence of the "Being of Light" (hence the eyes of the dying person following something else in the room that is invisible to the observers as pointed out by ROBIN) in its role as a calming influence?

Of course I suggest that the "Being of Light" is simply the Daemon projecting itself, as an hallucination, into the visual field of the dying Eidolon.

A Thought About The Virgin Life

Want to throw something I've been mulling over all day into this fine mix of minds!

Q. Could there be only ONE virgin life from which every eventuality stems from?

One particle of consciousness on the objective consciousness field from which bursts forth every conceivable outcome at the point of death? The Bohmian IMAX is therefore not a return but a continuation? It also seems more ‘efficient’, there isn’t trillions of VL’s creating numerous returns but one VL creating all the eventualities? If it all comes back to one VL, then precog, déjà vu etc stems from the same trunk from which all the branches grow? This also puts me in mind of the Big Bang Theory.

Slow Death Experience

When my Father was dying of cancer, Hope Hospice left a pamphlet informing the reader of what to expect as the end drew near. Reading this pamphlet I found myself fascinated by how the human body prepares itself for death. More interesting however was how the psyche prepared for this “final” transition.

The pamphlet stated that many people will talk about a pending journey; an experience my Father had right before he left us. I wasn’t there for the final days but my Mother said he spoke of packing his belongings and going to the train station for his departure. There were also other strange conversations with “imaginary” people and odd tales he would relate back in his final hours.

What I learned from all of this is how much dying is as important and as beautiful a part of our life as the living is. Life has created a well defined reaction mechanism to the termination of our time on Earth; a process I feel could not have possibly been influence by natural selection.

My question to the blog is what kind of experiences (if any) have you had relating to this phenomenon? I also wonder how it all fits in with the primary topic of CTF. What do you feel are the mechanisms and forces at play here as it relates to ITLAD?

What once seemed just a wall, is now a door...

Harking back to today's conservatory meeting with Tony, and the astonishing music track incident to which he refers in the previous post, I want to mention some other thoughts the warm afternoon helped inspire.

As we marvelled at the growing interest around the globe, I commented how Tony's book seems to be opening up a whole new pespective on 'what' and 'who' we are, creating a novel entry point or doorway (Kaballah?? - re: the book on your table today, Tony), through which we can try to find answers to the nature of our existence. Tony's conclusions in his book may be right or may be wrong, but it seems now, to me, to have become somewhat of a detail, because 'pre-ITLAD', my theories (and academic interest) about myself and those around me were limited to films and what I read in 'The Secret'. How far I have journeyed in such a short time... and such a long way to go!

Thanks Tony... the real purpose of your work may still be a mystery to you and others, but I now know that it is a key part of imminent changes in collective consciousness. Your role is clear... you must continue to explore, facilitate and write. You must follow where your subconscience leads you and not worry that the mission may still be unclear. All will surely be revealed in due course.

Weirdly Symbolic Synchronicity

Ed "ItsCoolToCare" has just left. He popped over to see me to discuss the implications of his son's Daemonic Encounter mentioned in his posting of the 13th May:

We were sitting in the conservatory soaking in the beautiful late spring sunshine and I had my ARCHOS mp3 machine playing in the background. Now you will recall my story with regard to the random play element of this machine and how it saved my life on the motorway. (as described:

Now this is a newer version of the same machine but it works in the same way. I had it on random play - a reminder, nearly 16,000 mp3's on this machine so a 1 in 16,000 chance of any one track being randomly selected.

Ed and I start discussing the nature of reality and how it can be seen as analogous to a super-sophisticated computer simulation/game (I was making particular reference to the observations made by Alex Shane last week in The Bridge Inn). As we started discussing this a new track was selected on the ARCHOS. It was track 4 of Sigur Rós ' album () (that is not a misprint by the way. That is the title of the album - and the tracks have no names either). Unofficially this track is called "Njósnavélin"which means "Spy Machine" in Icelandic

A split second before it began playing I absolutely knew what the next track would be ... and I knew why.

This particular track is the one that is played as the soundtrack of the final sequence of Vanilla Sky (when the Tom Cruise character David Aames realises that he is living in an illusion and chooses to jump off the top of a skyscraper).

The symbolism was not lost in me. Here was yet again a message to show me that this is my self-created phaneron - and just like what happens with David Aames it uses imagery from my own memory databanks to populate my world and give subtle nudges as to the real nature of reality.

Now what is really weird is that I have blogged many times before about this particular scene in that movie (e.g. http://cheatingtheferryman.blogspot.com/2008/03/waking-life-vanilla-sky.html) but not only that - in that blog I also placed a link to the actual sequence with the Sigur Rós song playing in the background.

And what does ( ) mean? Could it be a symbol of my oft used quotation of Emile Goncourt that life is "a nothing between two epileptic seizures"!

The "Inner Self Helper" - aka "The Daemon"?

When I completed the writing the first version of ITLAD back in 2000 I contacted Near-Death researcher Dr. Phyllis Atwater. Much to my surprise and delight Phyllis suggested that I send her a full copy of the book.

A few weeks later I received an email from Phyllis praising the book, saying that my theory and writing style reminded her of Dr.Melvin Morse, a founding father of NDE research. However she suggested that I had written it for myself rather than for a potential audience. She suggested that I go away and “re-write it for your readers”. I subsequently took this advice and the rest is, as they say, history.

However it is rather ironic that in the subsequent versions of ITLAD, and indeed the published version that you all know and love, the sections on Dr. Atwater’s research never made it through the process. However this does not mean that her work was invalid with regard to CTF – on the contrary. I was reading through the original version today and I came across the following section that is hugely supportive of my now, much refined, Daemon-Eidolon Dyad.

‘Dr. Atwater, stimulated by experiences of her own, has spent many years researching the theory of reincarnation and practiced as a professional hypnotherapist for six years. During this time she specialised in past life regressions as described earlier. However encounters with our ‘hidden entity’ contributed to her decision to close her practice.

After facilitating many past-life recollections she came to the conclusion that the significance of these memories was not what they literally described but what they said about the individual experiencer. As she writes “Regression sessions serve only one purpose, I came to realise, and that is to assist the client in gaining detachment and perspective.” However this was only a contributory factor because:

“Then I happened upon the human soul. It was most unusual how that occurred. The soul just ‘popped in’ and took over a session one day, surprising me and changing all the ‘rules’ I thought had applied to hypnosis.”

In my terminology the Daemon is simply the higher self, the all knowing, and immortal element of human consciousness. As such Dr Atwater choice of the term ‘soul’ is totally equivalent. For her this being exists outside of not only normal perception but also is in no way related to ‘personalities’ encountered in past-life recalls:

“After this first encounter I discovered that the soul, anyone’s soul, is unlike any individual or personality type supposed incarnation. It is unique unto itself. I came to recognise the soul as an objective and loving source of limitless knowledge. The room temperature would feel warmer when it emerged during a session and the client would seem to glow. Advice would be given either for the prostrate client, for me, or another not present. The soul never limited itself or played favourites. Sometimes discourses would issue forth on life and its purpose- gentle, effective discourses that seemed somehow awesome and sacred.”

Indeed as she rightly points out psychiatry now has a term for this personality behind the personalities. Known by the name of the ‘Inner Self Helper’ or ISH this being has the interests of its host personality as a priority and in this capacity assists and guides the therapist to rid its ‘lower self’ of multiple personalities. As Dr Atwater perceptively says “The ISH seemed to be the central organising core of the individual’s essence.’

I am now keen to discuss this ISH with my new friends, the Australian psychiatrists, and the rest of you on this Blogsite. Is this “Inner Self Helper” something that you have experienced?

SKYPE Conferencing

I am keen to use as many tools of communication as possible. As such it would be very useful to use SKYPE as an alternative method. I am simply amazed as to how effective this is - and its totally free! The full software can be downloaded onto your PC via http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/

I note that it has conference facilities as well as a method by which groups can be set up. As we are so geographically spread this seems a really good tool.

I have now set myself up with a webcam and microphone. I was in contact yesterday with fellow writer Bill Murtha who is around 300 miles from my home here on Wirral. It was amazing not just chatting but seeing each other as well - and all for free!!!

I grew up with my parents telling me that money is NOT important but relationships are!.....and i lived and learnt that my parents were right...i understood that life is so beautiful.....every moment is a gift....
i lost my mom and my father remarried.......its now been 19 years....now my father feels that money is the most important thing in this world(maybe life gave him a raw deal. he is 68 years old now..)...but my question is...
Does a human being`s perception become sharper as he ages?

God's Timeshare

Imagine you could live your life then, after death, your soul could hop in a Tardis and go back in time to be reborn as someone else - a completely different set of memories, feelings, desires, aspirations, and temperament (for all we'd like to believe these things are unique to each of us, there is ample evidence that they can be changed by physical injury suggesting a physical basis for these things). You might even return as a person you knew in you previous life.

You would simply be someone else, wouldn't you? Now imagine that has happened as many times as there are people. That would allow for the existence of just one consciousness. We may all be timeshares on God's mainframe. We might even be God slummin' it!

This does not necessarily cut across CTF - if this happens then we do return as ourselves eventually, and quite probably with the Daemon unique to us. But don't take too much notice of me - I spend too much time writing multi-tasking software so my perspective is suspect!

Post Seizure event

For those who live with a seizure/epilepsy condition, you will know that it is common to fall into a deep sleep immediately following a Tonic Clonic fit. My daughter used to do this every time. She would sleep for a good hour or so.

My 23 year old son, who has also had grand mals, is a bit more special in that his day to day life seems to be spent, some would say, in his 'right brain' and he quite visibly shares his day to day life with his daemon. This manifests a bit like a kind of Jekyll and Hyde - mostly he is gentle and kind and polite but sometimes, for no obvious reason, he will be Hyde... an angry, aggressive and distracted individual from another world, talking at people who we do not see. (Add to this the autism condition.)

Well, what is this leading to, I hear you ask? The connection is that he had a grand mal seizure last week.. his first for nearly 3 years. Yes, you probably understand our initial emotion of great disappointment that this should happen when we were becoming optimistic of reducing his medication.

Once his shaking stopped, his body reacted the way we are used to... he clearly wanted to fall into a deep sleep... BUT.. he did not. Something in him fought it off. So we then witnessed behaviour that I believe few will have seen. It was astonishing - so much so that once he was sitting down, safely, we started filming him so that we could share it with his psychologist.

I'm sorry that I cannot show his movie to the world, but I can tell you that for a good hour we watched a person whose left, 'dominant' brain seemed to have switched off, but whose body was being driven by something else. His language seemed like English but he had a lot of new words and concepts, and 'Hyde' was very prominent. And as he started to 'come out of it', the extreme personality gave way to a lot of fast 'switching', mumbling and confusion.

I have yet to decide for myself if what we saw was anything unusual, maybe connected to Eidolons and Daemons - or was it just a well documented, normal (as opposed to paranormal) response? Ed

Parallel Worlds

Hi,
Anyone happen to watch the BBC programme about the many TV shows and films that have portayed parallel worlds? They moved on from talking about Star Trek and Dr Who into films that are based around quantum physics, such as Sliding Doors and the notion of multiple worlds.
As I watched it I was thinking to myself how the producers of the show might have further benefited from having read ITLAD or maybe even just joining in the BLOG - which gets far more profound than they were able to manage.
Nevertheless, a good show, I thought. (Actually, it's just another fine example of how clever i am at creating my own illusions.)

ive always wondered about trust and how much is too much.....!
there are some people with whom u can trust your life with.....( hopefully your life is precious to u!)
for me building trust is of utmost importance....i think its trust that takes a relationship forward.....without trust in your self and the other im sure the relationship will surely fail...

RANZCP Conference, Melbourne

Slowly but surely CTF and ITLAD are becoming more and more known and, even better, accepted by a wider audience. I have received an email from two psychiatrists based in Australia - Dr Mahendra Perera and Dr Gayan Padmasekera. Both have read the book and are both fascinated and intrigued by its implications. However they have now given me the ultimate recognition by asking for my active involvement in the writing of a clinical handbook on Near-Death Experience. It is their intention to write a primer on the NDE phenomenon for clinicians in medical and health environments. They not only request that I write a chapter but also that I become a member of the editorial team of the book. I am very honoured.

Indeed both Mahendra and Gayan will be presenting a symposium on NDE at the forthcoming RANZCP (The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychaitrists) and plan to discuss the implications of itlad and CTF with the delegates. Honour indeed.

Alex Shane - the latest Itladian

On Tuesday 19th of May I met up with a guy called Alex Spilling at The Bridge Inn in Port Sunlight. Alex was up in Liverpool on business and was keen to meet up with me. Alex has read ITLAD and he is a massive fan. In fact at 6 foot 5 inches he probably is literally the book's biggest fan!

But what makes Alex unusual is his alter ego. Alex is also Alex "The Showstealer" Shane - probably the most successful British wrestler of the last ten years. Still only 28 he has been twice FWA and WAW British Heavyweight Champion. As well as being a presenter on Talksport TV Alex now earns is living as a wrestling promoter. However he has another side to his personality - a quietly spoken, intelligent and extremely reflective man who has some fascinating, and totally itladian ideas and theories. He kept both myself and my friend Richard enthralled for nearly two hours with regard to his philosophy about the nature of reality. (After Karl and Ed's visit a few weeks ago the poor Bridge Inn in Port Sunlight is now getting used to itladian visitations!)

Alex is very keen to bring is promotional skills to marketing ITLAD and CTF and get the theory across to a wider audience. He has access to TV studios in London and he and I are considering a joint video programme. All very exciting.

Alex will be joining us all on this blogsite as soon as he has the time. Believe me his ideas will really blow you away .......

A virtual home for us?

The potential for using Second Life as a means to spread CTF to masses is enormous. Many universities and institutions are represented there. I've met several educators and intellectuals from around the world. Recently I was made aware of a new project under development. I think it would make a wonderful home base for ITLADians in SL. For your consideration:

"Port Spinoza"

Port Spinoza will be a sim community (several islands) based on Amsterdam and Leiden during the age of enlightenment (17 and 18th Century). The community will be named after Baruch Spinoza, a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Jewish origin. Spinoza is considered one of the great rationalists of 17th century philosophy.

The goal of the project is to create a Second Life community with an "intellectual buzz" and engaging cafe life, and a place where arts and crafts and intellectual achievement is valued above power and wealth.

Tony, I gave Daemon a landmark to the architect's office where you can see a mock-up of the community. I've sent a message to one of the developers and hope to have more details by tomorrow.

Flanagan's Apple Meeting Friday 23rd May 2008

A small group of Itladian philosophers will be meeting tomorrow at around 1400 (UK time) in the real world 'version' of Flanagan's Apple in Liverpool, England. So far we have Gary, Karl, Richard, Alan and myself involved.

Whilst discussing the finer points of itlad and CTF (and probably imbuing small quantities of ale) we will attempt to log-on Second Life. I intend to bring my laptop with me and I know that Karl will have his. We will then have our avatars meet in the SL version of Flanagan's Apple. In this way we will play with reality and virtual reality in a way that itladians the world over will appreciate. Should any of you folks out there in cyberspace wish to join in please feel free to do so.

This is a dummy-run for a more planned attempt for the future but I am sure it will still be great fun.

Quantum Physics Experiments

Check out the May/June 2008 issue of SEED magazine. There is an article titled The Reality Tests which has a pretty good, but very brief, overview of quantum theory and mentions Bohm and several others. The kicker is that a group in Vienna has actually experimentally proven that we create the world just by looking at it. While the experiments were not described in detail, they confirmed that photons' "polarizations didn't exist before being measured."

The group then talked about real-world objects and concluded (from some experiments not described at all in the article):

... it does not matter how many particles are around, or how large an object is, quantum mechanics always holds true. The reason we see our world as we do us because of what we use to observe it. The human body is a just barely adequate measuring device. Quantum mechanics does not always wash itself out [i.e. the large number of particles "are in constant interaction and their environment serves to 'decohere' the quantum world -- eliminate superpositions -- to create the classical one we observer"], but to observe its effects for larger and larger objects we would need more and more accurate measurement devices. We just do not have the sensitivity to observe the quantum effects around us. In essence we do create the classical world we perceive ...

Not much detail in the article but very interesting nonetheless.

Spooky Avatar At A Distance Version 2

Jon: The image of Airey Luftig is even more strange. This snap was taken in 1980. In those days I had a rather more dangerous image than the 1977 version, or indeed how I am now. Note the "Johnny Depp" like ear ring. I really was "mad, bad and dangerous to know" .

My nickname in those days was "Zorba" (as in "Zorba The Peake" - get it?). This was a reflection (I assume anyway as it was not a nickname I gave myself) on my somewhat mediterranean features and the fact that I was (and still am) an absolute Grecophile.

Who would have assumed this from the gentle, white haired mild individual you all know now!

How Many Minds?

I admit there are subjects in ITLAD that I have yet to wrap my mind around. The one I have most difficulty with is Everett’s Many Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics. So as not to misrepresent my position, this is entirely a layman’s opinion. I am not a physicist, mathematician or member of any other uber geek profession. What I mostly am is confused.

My biggest problem with MWI is the philosophical questions it poses. There seems to be no rhyme or reason in a MWI existence. I like to believe everything in nature has a purpose. This purpose provides the testing ground in the evolutionary process. The norm is for the weak to perish and the strong to survive. In a MWI existence everything survives. Rather than growing a stronger reality, MWI accommodates the inferior position.

I also have a difficult time wrapping my mind around the infinite multiplication of matter. The examples usually given in MWI revolve around splitting Universes at some semi-major event in our personal existence. But how do we determine what that event threshold is? Why wouldn’t the infinite potential possibilities of every particle have this same power to create? And then there's the question of time. How often should we make these splits? Is it once every second? Or do these splits occur in infinite divisions thereof?

I know that just because I don’t comprehend these things doesn’t make them false. Still, I also believe the basic premise of ITLAD is not dependant on classic MWI. Maybe that’s part of the evolution of ITLAD theory; it continually splits and evolves into multiple, but separate, versions of itself. Here in my version only a single world exists – everything else exists only as potential.

New Kid in Town

Hello friends. I am very excited to be the latest member of this amazing blog. I’ve been enjoying this group’s work for a couple of months now and recently found the courage to comment on one of Tony’s posts. As luck would have it, that single comment generated an invitation to join. Now I find myself standing among giants…an incredible honor indeed. Strange experiences in fiction

I remember reading a science fiction novel some years ago (I think that it was 'Dreamside' by Graham Joyce) in which a group of participants in an experimental dream project start to experience a terrifying regression in which they apparently awaken from a dream, only to discover that they have awoken into another dream. The process continues, and the implication is that one could be trapped in this. I have never come across any references to this in reality, and would be interested if anyone has ever had a similar experience, or knows of any research into it. I have had the occasional lucid dream, but I tend to wake up fairly quickly once I realise that I am dreaming.
Whilst discussing science fiction, I will mention my own love of novels based upon alternative versions of ourselves interacting and entering one another's worlds, either through psychic interaction or physically. John Wyndham wrote a short story on this theme back in the 1950s, where I think a machine provided the means of transfer. Someone was paid a visit by a parallel self to advise him to marry an ex-girlfriend who was his wife in the parallel world.
There are two wonderful more recent novels on this theme, using the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Theory as the explanation. These are 'Infinity's Web' by Sheila Finch, and 'Lost Futures' by Lisa Tuttle'. Ian Watson has also written novels touching on these themes.
Finally, an interesting description of an experience from the autobiography of a mystical writer called Elisabeth Haitch. She was (I think) Hungarian, and must have written her book ('Initiation') around the 1970s. She is describing events in the first half of the 20th Century. She apparently started to relive memories of a past life in Ancient Egypt, when she was initiated. There are similarities to the writings of Joan Grant. I found references to her book on the Internet - mostly criticisms that what she describes is unlike what we know of Ancient Egypt. But the idea that interested me, and which touches on the nature of time, involves her description of her initiation. She describes tests, in which she experienced situations that could be failed in some way. I think that the tests involved the traditional elements. They were experienced in a dream like state of trance. But if you 'failed' the test (were ruled by one's passions, for instance), you would live the experience out in historical time, thousands of years later.

CONFESSION!

Ive to confess that I hate to receive gifts......Ive become cynical about receiving gifts....Ive become distrustful of people who give me something/or offer to do some favour for me..

I wonder why? I wonder what has made me so silly?

what is it that I really fear?

I feel so obliged to do/give more and even out the favour.......

sometimes I give away gifts(that Ive received) to other people....I feel so terrible....afterwards..

many a times, the gift....gets damaged...some how..and I don't use it then....I wonder why this happens.....is it an unconscious effort to not use the gift..... ?

I feel happy to use things that Ive bought with my hard earned cash.... and let me tell u, I love to give gifts...

why am I not a good receiver?

A near miss

My daughter and I nearly had an accident this morning. A teenage boy in a huge pickup truck decided to change lanes without glancing over to see that we were in the lane beside him. As I replay the event in my head I can not pinpoint when I responded. By the time I perceived the impending doom, my reflexes had me steering away from him. In fact, what brought my attention to the situation was hearing my own car horn blast as my hand was pressed hard on it.

Daemonic guidance?
Precognition?

I don't have any recollection of the event prior to the horn blast.

I love to travel, and ive managed to travel to many places in my country(alone as well as with family and friends) and my country is vast!( India) but as soon i reach the destination i feel this great pull /frustration....i feel i must go back..i feel i should not stay .... i feel lost.....i have this great sense of worthlessness ..i feel as if i dont belong ...i cant understand why this happens every single time......the rest, the solace,the excitement that i seek happens only during the journey......but as soon the destination nears i feel sick......i cant enjoy, i cant relax.....any ideas?

Continuing on a Buddhist Theme

Last year a Buddhist monk travelled from Australia to meet me.

In a letter to me he explained that he had found a copy of a paper I had published in the Journal of Near-Death Studies lying on the floor of a hut in his monastery in Western Australia (The Bodhinyana Monastery in Serpentine, WA).

He knew as soon as he picked it up that it was of great importance. As with many Buddhist monks Ekaggata is a very well read individual with a great interest in particle physics and neurology. However he was particularly fascinated by my Daemon-Eidolon Dyad and my new approach to the concept of The Eternal Return (Reccurance). In June last year I met him in a wondeful monastery deep in the English countryside.The Forest Hermitage (วัดป่าสันติธรรม) is a branch of Wat Nong Pah Pong (วัดหนองป่าพง), the late Luang Por Chah's principal monastery in N. E. Thailand.

Indeed that very day was, by tradition, both the Buddha's birthday and also the celebration of his day of enlightenment under the Bohdi Tree. This coincidence was not lost on me - my Daemon had ensured that my first ever visit to a Buddhist monastery was to be on such an auspicious and significant day.

I sat with Ekaggata Bikkhu in a tiny spartan hut in the grounds. He explained to me that in his opinion my writing was of profound importance and that I should focus all my attention on getting it better known. Indeed he amazed my by commenting that my theory was, in many ways, pure Buddhism. He added that he was delighted that somebody with absolutely no knowledge of Buddhist scripture could have come to such "enlightened" conclusions.

These revelations made me slightly scared and filled me with trepidation. This had never been my intention when I started out on my quest but there was, as far as Ekaggata was concerned, an underlying reason for my writing. I simply wanted to write a book for my own enjoyment. I never expected it to be published nor anybody else to be really interested in my ideas. But now, with book sales in excess of 30,000, and the events described in my last post, I just sit back and wonder what this is all really about.

Ekeggata and I are still in snail-mail contact and he continues to urge me to follow my 'inner guide'. He has sent me many books and articles and I am finding revelations, both external and internal, on a daily basis.

I find this all very strange and not a little awe-inspiring. Ekaggata is not alone in contacting me. Two years ago I was an arch rationalist and materialist and now as well as Buddhist monks, Sufi Shayaks, mediums,Gnostics,Hindu Mystics and even Occult adepts (for example The Servants of the Light - SOL) have contacted me - all of whom seem to see something of profound importance in me and my writings. Not the route I expected - but I guess this is something my Daemon has always known!

Strange Events

Something very strange happened a few days ago. Those of you who know me are aware that although I am very interested in psychic phenomenon I consider myself a strong rationalist. In other words I seek out proof before simply accepting the claims of others. Over the last year I have travelled the UK doing talks and lectures and I have met many fascinating people - many of whom have rather shaken my cosy, rationalistic, world view. However the last few days have been of earthquake proportions. For the first time in my life I experienced a precognition that I know was true - because it happened to me.

I had met Aloha Gary (esteemed member of this blog) for coffee in Chester. Afterwards we nipped back to his house to pick up some paperwork when I noticed that he had a very peculiar object called a Shambhala Maitreya Solar Cross (image top right). I recognised it because a few weeks before another member of this blog (Ed aka Itscooltocare) had shown me an identical version of this fascinating artifact.

Gary suggested that I hold it, close my eyes and concentrate. I did so and immediately I perceived a detailed hypnogogic image in the centre of my visual field. Now I have experienced hypnogogic imagery for years but without exceptions the images are usually located in my periphery vision. I have to 'turn' my minds-eye to my extreme left (always left, interestingly enough) to 'see' them. As soon as this takes place they disappear. Over the years I have realised that the best way to view them is by 'looking' straight ahead and trying catch what is being presented via my periphery 'vision'. In this way I can hold them for much longer.

But this one was different. It was absolutely vivid, rock solid and detailed. It was a metallic blue star-like image with eight points. What I particularly noticed was that the lower point (at 6 o'clock) was longer than the other seven. I thought this a little strange. It was in plain view for a good 30 seconds then faded. I was stunned.

On opening my eyes I described in some detail to Gary exactly what I had seen. As I recall I think I even drew it for him.

Now I have been suffering from a particularly painful case of adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) - an old sports injury that has come back to haunt me - the pain had become so extreme that I needed more prescription pain killers. The next day after I met with Gary I made an appointment with my doctor and went up to the local surgery. As I checked in at the reception desk my eye caught a display. It was a box selling charity lapel pins. I couldn't believe it. The pin was exactly, and I mean exactly, what I had seen in my hypnogogic the day before. The picture at the top of this post is of the pin in question. Right colour, correct number of points and even the correct 6 o'clock point being longer. I was so stunned I commented upon it to the receptionist. "Oh", she replied "they were only brought in about an hour ago!"

The lapel pin is to celebrate the 25 year anniversary of St John's Hospice, a care home for the terminally ill, here on Wirral.

I have no idea what this means. Was it some form of 'future memory'? But if so why that particular object?

Applying Itlad to this I can only assume that it was some form of Daemonic message. Could it be that the Solar Cross can, in some way, open up the Eidolon-Daemon communication channels?

I guess only time will clear up this little mystery.

Addition: If you look at the image of my signature on the right (white box with the name 'Anthony Peake' in script you will notice a peculiar cross-like logo to the right. This is my 'symbol' and has been for nearly forty years. Old school and university friends will immediately recognise this. Over the years I have marked my books, albums etc with it. It is so long ago now that I have no idea why I started doing this. looking at my hypnogogic 'star' and my logo I can see a distinct similarity. Odder and odder!

Walpurgisnacht

Tonight (April 30th) is Walpurgisnacht [Vahl-PUR-ges-nachkt], a day celebrated across the world, but often deeply misunderstood or even completely unknown by most.

For those of us to whom such things are important, Walpurgisnacht (or Walpurgis Night) is one of the most significant days of the year. Named after Saint Walpurga (Wessex 710AD), it is most commonly known as a Pagan Spring Festival but its meanings run much deeper than that and are varied throughout many countries.

In world culture Walpurgisnacht has played a part within the works of such esteemed luminaries as Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Bram Stoker, HP Lovecraft, Thomas Mann, Robert Anton Wilson, Bulgakov, Dennis Wheatley, HR Giger, Thomas Pynchon any many, many more to even within the music of Black Sabbath, Procol Harum, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden *wink to Matt Cameron*, and interestingly JK Rowling; for the “Death Eaters” within the Harry Potter novels were originally to be called the Knights of Walpurgis (Walpurgis Nights…… get it?), but she changed the name for fear of giving poor Harry too much of an occultic edge, but of course such was not lost on those of us with eyes wide open to the greater realities!
At least Phillip Pullman used the term Daemon directly!

Walpurgisnacht dates back to the commemoration of the time when it was told that Odin died whilst trying to retrieve the “knowledge of the runes” and that this night is said to be a time of weakness between the realms of the living and the dead; the night when the doorways between the two are most ajar, as it is followed by May 1st or Beltane, the return of the light and the sun which is celebrated as May Day.

This day was Saint Walpurgis’ Holy Day and thus the night became Walpurgisnacht.

Curiously, Adolf Hitler, along with several members of his staff (including Joseph Goebbels) committed suicide on Walpurgisnacht 1945. And in the History Channel's documentary, “Hitler and the Occult”, author Dusty Sklar stated that "It's believed by some people that he chose April 30th deliberately because it coincided with Walpurgis Night, which is believed to be the most important date (along with Halloween) in Occultism. So, according to some commentators, he was giving himself up to the powers of darkness."

BLIMEY !

Therefore, for those of you seeking to establish an effective communication with your own Daemon, tonight could well be the best night to reach deep into your consciousness and become at one with the true realities in a much more positive way than old Adolf adopted.

On-Line book review

Whilst doing a general Google search I came across this review of ITLAD. I thought that you guys may find it interesting:

Anthony Peake has a winner on his hands with this fine look at life after death. The book has one of the finest notes and bibliography sections for this type of book you would hope to find! Peake has a candid, inquisitive style of writing which adds to the tone and clarity of this book in a vivid way which entertains and educates at the same time. Billed as the extraordinary science of what happens when we die, the reader will not be disappointed in what she or he discovers! Following the foreword by Professor Bruce Greyson and a prologue, there are fourteen concise chapters, which are concluded by an insightful epilogue. Each chapter is a gem to observe and consider in regard to what lies ahead after death. I thought the chapters "Clues from History," "The Guardian of Forever," and "The Friend in the Shadows" remarkable in scope and memorable reading. The whole book is worth your time. I highly recommend this book for its clarity, intent, and honest approach to life after death. You will definitely have much to think about when you read Peake's fine book!

The Burly of Hurly variety is back from the Dam of Amster and shockingly has a new post...about a film! Anthony it suddenly occured to me whilst re-watching this film last night that i don't think we have ever mentioned this one to each other while discussing films that have an ITLADian theme. Near death (or pretty much actual death) experiences are so central to your theory so i thought i'd get your opinion on this film, or if you havn't seen it, suggest very strongly that you do so.

The movie, if you havn't seen it, is about as group of medical students that try to control and create temporary death of a few minutes in order to experience exactly what is on the other side. What they experience is extremely haunting but very relevant to your theory as it has links with the life review (playback).

You've argued that we can make subtle changes based on mutliple world possibilities and intervention from the Daemon but do you think these changes are provoked by morality? Maybe i'm being presumptious to assume you don't quite believe in the judgemental concept of heaven and hell (I hope not) but surely any changes we are encouraged to make are either for the sake of morality or our own self benefit / happiness?

The 'Sensation' Of Being Stared At

"Look into my eyes, my eyes, not around my eyes, look into my eyes"

I’m sure that most, if not all of you, will have experienced the feeling of being looked at, only to turn around and discover that you actually were being. Or indeed have been looking at someone who has then turned around and looked right at you.

My question is a simple one: How is this ‘sensation’ possible?

Many of the world’s literary giants have used this scenario within their fiction: Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Victor Hugo, JB Priestley, Aldous Huxley and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to name but a few - my dear friend Robert Rankin being another (albeit a more obscure one). I’m sure that HurlyBurly can reference many film examples on here too.

When I was lolling about in the pub on Wednesday, in between meetings, I was giving this whole question much consideration (see, even though I may frequent many an ale-house I am in fact still working!). It began when I was standing at the bar waiting for my pint of mead to be poured into yon silver tankard when I felt I was being stared at. Admittedly I often draw attention to myself owing to my monocle, exquisitely carved cane and silk top hat, but I turned around and there indeed was a young woman looking straight at me. Her eyes immediately averted once I had turned around, but once I had been served with my frothing tankard I ambled over to her table to talk to her.

As well as my question regarding just how this ‘sensation’ of being stared at works, I also wondered how, despite the eye contact lasting for seemingly just a fraction-of-a-fraction of a second, both the observer and the observed are equally fully aware of the interaction. For when I turned around and looked at her, she immediately averted her gaze but we BOTH knew that it had happened.

MY NEW THEORY: ."COLLAPSING THE CONSCIOUSNESS WAVE"

I think the answer to both my questions lie within the Consciousness Field and the temporal delay between empirical observation and conscious awareness.

If we consider, for a moment, Niels Bohr's 'Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics' which states that all energy (including basic particles) exists as a wave-function, and only upon observation by a conscious being does this wave "collapse" and become a particle - Electrons, Light, Atoms etc all behave in this manner - then I suggest that Consciousness itself also behaves in this way. If Collective Consciousness (The Akashic Record, The Information Universe, Collective Daemonic Consciousness - there are so many descriptions of such) is indeed a wave-form then I suggest that we all, as conscious sentient beings, collapse that wave and create particles of Subjective Consciousness, which is, in effect, ourselves; our experiences and our empirical life. In essence, that we are all one Consciousness experiencing itself Subjectively.

As individual Subjective Consciousnesses we can then interact with each other (alternate subjective consciousnesses) forming Quantum Entanglements on the Objective Consciousness Field. These interactions can also include the perceptive field of consciousness which is where I think the answer to this ‘sensation’ of being stared at lies.

And interestingly, in my chat with the young woman in the pub I asked her how long she thought our eye contact had lasted, and she said she thought that it didn’t, as she had looked away as soon as I turned around, but she admitted that she did ‘know’ that I had seen her. Now to me, the eye contact between us WAS brief, but certainly longer than in her perceptive field, and I assert that this is further evidence for the temporal time delay between what we ‘see’ and what is presented to our consciousness.

I’d be interested to hear all of your experiences regarding ‘being stared at’ and your thoughts on my new theories behind the weirdness.

Just read ITLAD - first impressions

Hello - thought that I would make a first post. These will be impressions rather than deep reflections, but here goes.
I discovered ITLAD through an interview on Astraea Radio, and the ideas interested me and struck a few chords. Tony has brought together a number of theories regarding the nature of time that have been around a fair time (Dunne, Ouspensky etc) with more recent scientific work in physics and neuroscience, and the results open a number of doors.
I wonder if anyone has come across the work of Stan Gooch? I don't know a lot about Jayne's work, but I read some of Gooch's books some years ago. Briefly, he thought that the cerebrum and cerebellum provided a more fundamental split in consciousness than the two brain hemispheres, with a system of awareness focussed in the cerebellum operating beneath our 'normal' consciousness and having similar abilities to those assigned to the Daemon.
With regard to the two brain hemispheres, I was unsure exactly how this connects to the Daemon/Eidolon polarity. Is the Daemon connected with the right hemisphere or the dominant hemisphere? In my case, I suspect that it is the right brain that is dominant. I see the rotating dancer in the video posted on the Ferryman site as moving clockwise, and I remember someone once giving me a series of psychometric tests as part of a job application and concluding that I was 'slightly right-brain dominant'. I would guess that there are more left brain dominant people in our society, but I am only guessing.
The idea of multiple personalities rings true. ITLAD suggests that they are projections of the Daemon. But so is the Eidolon. In Jung's autobiography 'Memories, Dreams and Reflections', he describes an early dream in which he saw a meditating yogi who had his own face. He realised that the yogi was dreaming him, and that he would 'die' when the yogi awoke.
I remember a dream I had in 1979, when I was on holiday in Rhodes. I went to bed after drinking, and had a very vivid dream in which my personality was pictured as a project run by a company. There was a Board of Directors, having a meeting to discuss progress. They felt that things were going badly, and were arguing. There was one figure whom I called the Managing Director. Whilst the others were arguing, he left the meeting to run the project himself. Did my life change from this point? Not that I am aware of. I have had powerful dreams both before and since.
The idea of some of these inner personalities being parts of people who have lived rather appeals to me, and provides what to me is a possible explanation of some reported experiences of past life memories.
I hope to add more considered reflections in due course.

Virgin Life

What initiates a virgin life? How is that created? I see the term used on the blog but it seems logical that one's first life is so termed but there seems a bit of a puzzle here.
We know a new born is created by the physical union of male and female but they don't create life that seems to be the mystery add on bit. That new born then can have an old life reborn or a new life is that is what is meant by a virgin life?
Has anyone got any theories on why a virgin life suddenly becomes created.

I want to first explain that jeevan’s/self`s constitution stays same forever. Everyone wants to know jeevan (self) and wants to seek its fulfillment.
Jeevan is neither physiochemical, nor is it something ethereal.
Jeevan is an atom, a constitutionally-complete atom.
What is constitutional-completeness? A constitutionally-complete atom (or jeevan) neither expels-out nor does it admit-in any subatomic particles. Its constitution continues to be the same – forever. Whereas, the atoms participating in physiochemical natural-formations exhibit expelling and admitting of sub-atomic particles - which result into their numerous constitutions as different types of constituting-atoms.
Change can happen in the number of sub-atomic particles in a constituting-atom. It’s the only kind of change possible in existence – and there’s no other kind of change. Changes which a human-being can make happen - are also limited to changing the number of sub-atomic particles through expelling or imbibing activities in constituting-atoms.Constituting-atoms are of two kinds - hungry-atoms and emissive-atoms. The atoms which need (hunger for) imbibing more sub-atomic particles have been named here as “hungry-atoms”.
The atoms from which some sub-atomic particles are inclined for emission are called here as “emissive-atoms”. In this way, both kinds of atoms exhibit their activities towards becoming fulfilled or constitutionally-complete
.A constitutionally-complete atom is with fulfilled-constitution, so that it has no further need for admittance or expelling of subatomic particles. This constitutionally-complete atom itself is conscious-entity. It’s named as conscious-entity or jeevan – as it has required capabilities for completely realizing knowing-ability and sensual-ability. Even if man could somehow compose a body-formation (in laboratory) - in the absence of jeevan there would be no way of realizing sensual-ability in it, leave aside knowing-ability.
Humankind’s living in orderliness and its participancy in overall orderliness is an outcome of its realizing both knowing-ability and sensual-ability. All animals realize sensual-ability. There’s no way for a human-being to achieve fulfillment (or happiness) – without realizing knowing-ability.Desire for happiness is inalienable from human-being. In our attempts to fulfill this desire – we sometimes imagine of achieving happiness through comforts and hoarding, or through worshipping and renunciation. All attempts of everyone are for achieving fulfillment (or happiness) – but there’s no proof (or evidence) of anyone’s attempts becoming successful. humans are one when right, and are many when wrong. For whole humankind to be one – there was a need to identify the carrier of rightness which is common for all humans. I have recognized that commonality as Jeevan.

A LETTER....

I have been most interested in all the Posts of course!!! And now , apropos of the latest ones, I find myself remembering how, even from age 5 or so . how fascinating an idea I found was to address a Letter to your Older Self or even your Younger self, I know this is incorporated into books of Psychology but it is SOOO fascinating!!! i.e. What would you advise your younger self to do in a situation of uncertainty, or even What would you write to your Self in 10 or 20 years time??This seems to embody a lot of the Itlad Theory... so what would YOU advise your older or younger Self to do differently?

Goethe's "Time Slip"

Jesamyn's question to Ron after his posting A STRANGE EVENT has stimulated me to post the strange event experienced by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. Goethe described the event in his autobiography Poetry & Truth (part 3, book 11). He wrote:

'I was riding on the footpath towards Drusenheim, and there one of the strangest presentments occurred to me. I saw myself coming to meet myself on the same road on horseback, but in clothes such as I had never worn. They were light grey mixed with gold. As soon as I had aroused myself from the daydream the vision disappeared. Strange however, it is that eight years later I found myself on the identical spot, intending to visit Frederika once more, and in the same clothes which I had seen in my vision, and which I now wore, not from choice but by accident.'

Let us review this whole event in the light of the information we now have. Goethe sees himself as he will be in eight years time. In my opinion this incident implies that Bohm’s concept of enfoldment, Herman Weyl’s explanation of Minkowski’s spacetime and my theory of a three-dimensional life projection may be correct. As far as my theory is concerned this incident is a simple programming error. For a second Goethe slips out of his ‘review’ and perceives an event that to him is yet to happen but within the timeless zone of the life review has concurrent existence. As regards Bohm’s theory incidents like this are bound to occur as areas of enfolded reality touch upon each other.

Another explanation could be found within Everett’s Many Worlds Interpretation. Goethe and his double inhabited parallel universes that just happened to overlap at that point. However for Goethe this explanation would have been totally unnecessary because within his philosophy this was not his first time living his life, he believed he had followed the same life course many times before. In 1813 he attended the funeral of the fellow writer and philosopher Christoph Martin Wieland. The death of this much-respected man stimulated a fellow mourner, Johannes Falk to ask Goethe where he thought Wieland’s soul could be found. After some reflection the great man embarked upon a lengthy and detailed reply. During the course of this Goethe made the following interesting statement:

I am certain that I have been here as I am now a thousand times before, and hope to return a thousand times. As such Goethe would not at all be surprised in meeting his own future self because, as he says, he has been through his life many times and as such has become more subconsciously aware of what is really happening to him.

A QUESTION!

Coming from a country where most of its inhabitants believe in after life, Ive always wondered about the concept of` soul`. The Christians believe in eternal life, Muslims believe in the day of judgement, in Hinduism there is the concept of reincarnation.
my question is ,whether anyone knows about the composition of the soul/self.?..we know about the composition of our body.....
the self is different from the body.....(we all know that)...so what happens to the soul when the body dies?where does it go?what is it composed of?

A STRANGE EVENT

Recently I e-mailed Anthony about an odd event that I had as a teenager. I published it as a letter in Fortean Times some years ago. I still have the mag somewhere in the depths of my room but here is the story. I grew up in the little Welsh border town known as Hay-on-Wye today famous for it's secondhand book trade and it's literature festival every May. One for Mr Peake in the future perhaps?
I am coming up to 61 now and at the time was about 16 or 17 at most. In those days it was not uncommon to see lads fishing off the bridge at Hay, underneath which the River Wye flowed some 40 feet below. The art of fishing off this bridge was to catch a very light but up river breeze that was just strong enough to carry your line up river with a big old artificial fly on the end of it and dap the fly up and down on the pool which was slightly more on the town's side rather than in the middle of the river .
So this particular day I arrived on the bridge on my bicycle one morning and I think it could have well been in May perhaps early June. Although it was sunny it was not particularly warm and a cool up river strongish breeze was the order of the day. So I had decided to use a worm as bait and a lot of lead weight, even then the long line was lifting in the breeze. Out of my left eye I saw a man approaching from the town, down Bridge Street and onto the wide modern concrete bridge (rebuilt 1958). As he approached I had the impression he was some sort of religious minister or vicar. Although I don't now recollect seeing a dog collar but presume he must have worn one. Anyway not being a church goer I was rather a little timid of this chap approaching who then stopped on my left hand side and asked me how long I had been there, had I caught anything etc. I said I hadn't been there long and caught nothing. Now I must point out I had never ever seen this man before or afterwards and haven't a clue who he was. There was no one on the bridge beside him and me, you can see in both directions quite a long way. He said try straight down there below the bridge, I said there were no fish under there as I have tried many times, besides the river runs too fast and can't see your line and I needed a lot of weight. Anyway as he was stood there I hauled up the line added extra weight and dropped the line straight down, I am sure at this point he had just moved away from me and instantly a huge fish a really big chub had taken the bait. I turned to say I have got one and he had vanished. There was no way he could have gone back the way he came or gone on the other way in a few seconds. As I say the view both ways was distant and open. No car had come along to pick him up. As always no witnesses either. The fish was so big the line was going to break anyway so I jerked the line and snapped it. Then horror of horrors struck me, had this man jumped off the opposite side of the bridge whilst destracting me? I rushed over looked down but nothing just the river, the river was quite shallow on the downside so had he vaulted over the railings he would have been easy to see.
I quickly packed up my kit, jumped on my bike and still in disbelief cycled around town looking for him, what had happened, where had he gone?
How did he know I would catch a fish where he had pointed, was he a ghost? He was solidly human I thought but can't be sure of his face at all. He was grey haired, a light brown mac, a trilby type hat. Was he a figment of my imagination, was he my Daemon. Was there some warp in time, in my reality. I went home told my parents and my friends later that day. What could they say, nothing, no particular comment. I later told my much older sister who still today at 75 remembers me telling her. Memory of the event still seems clear to me but still puzzles me and it is odd with age you tend to question the event however my sister still remembers me telling her and I am grateful for that.

Animals

I just wondered if anyone had considered whether animals have a Daemon on an animal scale, our human brain whilst maybe more advanced than say an intelligent dog the dog brain still has two hemispheres etc. Often animals seem to tap into a wider sensory perception than humans. Even birds can show some amazing feats of intelligence even though their brain is small. Many animals may see a different version of reality perhaps. There are accounts of animals appearing to read their owners minds. Animals have tracked down owners over thousands of miles of territory to places they have never been before. That is some Daemon at work to do this but is it the animals or the human owner's Daemon?.
I am a little unclear what I am trying to prove here if anything but only humans have been discussed and feel that whilst we are limited to human to human discussion on these topics and we cannot prove say Deja Vue in animals so easily it must presumably exist. Or is human existence something special and unique

The PHI Experiment

Those of you who have read my book will know that I make great play upon a phenomenon known as the PHI Effect.

In 1910 Czech psychologist Max Wertheimer noted that two lights flashed through small apertures in a darkened room at short intervals would appear to be one light in motion; this perception of movement in a stationary object he termed ‘the PHI phenomenon’ and this in turn became the basis of a whole school of psychology, Gestalt. Together with two assistants, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka, he began to study the PHI phenomenon in earnest. Although they spent many years looking into the subject it was to become something of an oddity within human perception. That did not mean that the phenomenon did not continue to intrigue and beguile all that encountered it.

In 1977, the philosopher Nelson Goodman asked psychologists Paul Kolers and Michael von Grunau what would happen if, in the PHI phenomenon, the two illuminated spots were of different colours. This was so simple but revolutionary that the two psychologists immediately set up an experiment. They had a good idea of what to expect; either that two flashing spots would replace the single spot, or an illusory spot would change from one colour to another working its way through all the hues between. What actually happened was astounding. Two different coloured spots were illuminated for 150 milliseconds each (with a 50-millisecond interval); the first spot seemed to begin moving and then change colour abruptly in the middle of its illusory passage toward the second location. Goodman wondered:

How are we able to fill in the spot at the intervening place-times along a path running from the first and second flash before the second flash occurs?

For Daniel Dennett the mind somehow holds back the full perception of this experience until it is fully understood. The colour change is experienced by consciousness after the exercise has been completed. Dennett says:

Suppose the first spot is red and the second, displaced, spot is green. Unless there is ‘precognition’ in the brain (an extravagant hypothesis we will postpone indefinitely), the illusory content, red switching to-green-in-midcourse cannot be created until after some identification of the second, green spot occurs in the brain. But if the second spot is already ‘in conscious experience’ would it not be too late to interpose the illusory content between the conscious experience of the red spot and the conscious experience of the green spot? How does the brain accommodate this sleight of hand?

I suggest that this proof that the brain 'buffers', and therefore by implication, 'records' sensory information before it is presented to consciousness. In this way I believe that I show how it can be that at the point of death a full recording of ones life can be re-shown as the 'Panoramic Life Review' as it is termed by NDE researchers.
